Can I get my health insurance for the visa without being in Spain yet?

It's the first question almost everyone asks while preparing their non-lucrative visa, digital nomad visa, or family reunification application from outside Spain: do I need to already be in Spain to get the health insurance they're asking for?

The short answer is no. You can arrange it from your home country, before you move, and that's exactly what you need to submit with your visa application.

Why it's required before you arrive

Spanish immigration authorities require private health insurance — with no co-payments and no waiting periods — as one of the conditions for granting most residence visas. That certificate has to be submitted along with the rest of your documents, usually at the Spanish consulate in your country. So in practice, you need the policy in place and the certificate in hand before your visa is even approved.

How the remote process works

  1. Online application. You fill in your details, choose your coverage, and sign the contract digitally — no need to set foot in Spain or visit any office.

  2. Payment. You can pay by card from anywhere, no Spanish bank account required.

  3. Coverage certificate. Within a few days you receive the official document to attach to your visa application, formatted the way your consulate expects.

  4. Support along the way. If you're unsure exactly which certificate format your consulate requires (some are stricter than others), you can sort that out by email or video call before submitting your paperwork.

What if my visa gets denied?

That's a fair concern — nobody wants to pay for insurance tied to a visa that doesn't end up being approved. Always check the exact refund conditions with your agent before signing up, since this varies by insurer and policy type — it's better to confirm it for your specific case than to assume a general policy applies.

Which visas does this insurance work for?

The same type of private health insurance applies, with small variations, to several situations:

  • Non-lucrative residence visa

  • Digital nomad visa

  • Family reunification

  • Residence renewals

Each consulate can have its own small requirements about exactly which certificate it accepts, so if you're unsure about your specific case, it's best to confirm before signing up.
